I believe that one of the most important rules of organizing is keeping like items together. If you store things in a way that makes sense, you will be able to find even that rarely used item when you really need it.
Yesterday, a client I worked with last September texted me and asked if I remembered where their First Day of School sign was stored.
So I thought for a moment and remembered where we had stored the extra school supplies. I suggested that she check there. As I waited to hear back, I tried to think back to where else we might have stored the sign almost a year ago and came up blank. The sign is for school. It should be with school supplies. Five minutes later I got an elated text with a photo of the sign.
